Our judge for our 2008 Championship Show

Mrs Satu Mononen

I would like to thank the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Scotland for inviting me to judge at this prestigious event. The exhibitiors for presenting their Bernese in such clean condition, my stewards Kenny Reid and Stephen Thomson for a well run show-ring and George and Agnes Wilson for their excellent hospitality.

I enjoyed my day very much even although the weather was not as perfect as we would all have hoped for. The show ground was excellent, such a large ring was available inside, almost as big as that planned outside. The floor was very good and also the lighting in the hall. The atmosphere was very nice and exhibitors accepted gracefully the decisions I made.

Before I start the short individual critiques I would make some general comments. There was a very good entry and the classes were well attended with few absentees. I was pleased with my class winners and felt that the overall quality of the Bernese was good. There were some very excellent heads and expressions, particularty. Movement is very important faultless movement tells me there aren't many big faults in anatomy. As I said in my ring this is a working breed that should move easily and could work in the farms like farmer dogs did many years ago. That is impossible for dogs ten or even more kilos overweight! Some dogs were absolutely too fat. It's not healthy for dogs and every pet owner should be worried for their dog's welfare.

Bites were good, no missing teeth and no big problems with eyes or ears. Perfect colours and good coat qualities with all dogs. I found two dogs with entropion and five dogs with a kink in their tail. That's quite a lot. In the European countries those problems are disqualification faults (in theFCI breed standard) and those dogs cannot be shown. Also be careful of the temperaments. This is a good natured and friendly breed and nervousness and shyness needs to be carefully watched.

The Best In Show winner was fantastic!! She was seven years old and still so perfect. What a head and bone she has. I heard she has won a lot and I can very easily understand why. Be proud of her! Also R.B.I.S was an excellent bitch without any faults. She might be my choice to add to my breeding program with that size and harmony. B.O.S. a charming gentleman who is also a credit to the breed.

It was a great pleasure to take part in the evening program on Saturday evening. What a program you had! I also enjoyed very much spending Sunday in Kelso watching your Funday with companion dog show. I will certainly steal some of the ideas back to Finland. We should all learn to enjoy this hobby like you do. You have made the effort to get everything running so well. The whole show was so well organised.

Thank you for a very enjoyable day and special thanks for judge's gifts you gave me. You should have seen my husband's smiling face when he saw 'Genuine Malt Scotch Whisky' arriving in Tampere, it will go so well in the crystal decanter and glasses. WOW!

My best wishes to the Club and the Bernese in Scotland.

WORKING CARTS KELSO 2008

FIRSTLY CAN I SAY A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE COMMITTEE FOR INVITING ME TO JUDGE THE WORKING CART COURSE AT KELSO 2008. THERE IS ALWAYS A GOOD TURN OUT OF CARTERS TO THIS EVENT SO IT WAS A REAL PLEASURE FOR ME TO JUDGE A WIDE RANGE OF DOGS AND HANDLETS THAT  I WOULD NOT NORMALLY SEE.

THE STANDARD OF CARTING GETS BETTER YEAR ON YEAR, WITH SOME ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FAULT,BUT REMBER ITS ALL ABOUT TAKING PART AND HAVING FUN, BERNESE ARE WORKING DOGS AND THEY LOVE A CHALLENGE.

TO SAY THE WEATHER AT KELSO WAS CHANGEABLE WOULD BE FLIRTING WITH THE TRUTH, IN BETWEEN THE SHOWERS IT RAINED!!!

AS THE HEAVENS OPENED AND THE RAIN CAME DOWN IN TORRENTS I WAS TOLD BY ONE OF THE CARTING GROUPS THAT IT WAS LIGHT DRIZZLE FOR SCOTLAND! AND I THINK HE MEANT IT.

THERE WERE 21 BERNESE THAT TOOK PART IN THE CARTING COURSE, WITH ONLY TWO THAT FAILED, BUT I WILL NOT MENTION THERE NAMES, BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME TIM & ANDREW !!!
